Church of the Virgin (TOBED)

Versión en español

The Church of the Virgin of Tobed has a single nave of rectangular plan, with a squared-off presbytery occupied by three, square chapels. These open on to the nave by way of three pointed arches, the central one slightly wider. It also has a high choir at its foot. The nave contains three rectangular, oblong bays, covered with three simple groin vaults, between which are three shorter ones with pointed vaults that project on the exterior as tower-buttresses. On the sides are shallow chapels are created between the buttresses, also groin vaulted with pointed arches opening on to the nave.

IGLESIA DE LA VIRGEN

Corresponding to the typology of the fortress church, there is a tribune or walkway above the side aisle chapels and the three of the presbytery, which gives it a marked defensive character. From this, gallery windows open onto the interior that serve to illuminate the nave, except over the wall and first bay where the windows are blind and thus serve only a decorative purpose.

2 TRIBUNAS 3 TRIBUNAS

The tribune opens on the exterior via pointed arches that make a series of four on the zone of the wall and the first bay, with the two side ones being blind, serving as vents. This does not occur in the other two bays, reflecting a change of plan. On the south façade one can see how the upper part of the tower-buttresses are pierced by a pointed niche that serves as a passage from the passageway between the presbytery and the southeast tower, which has no other access.

On the exterior, the church presents a military aspect, compact, with four tower-buttresses on each side and undecorated except on the principal façade at the foot of the building. On the other facades, east, north and south, the monotony is only broken by three cornices, composed of a band of angled bricks over projecting brackets. The distribution of these cornices does not follow the actual structure of the church, since the first one, that visually separates the level of the chapels from the walkway, does not coincide in the interior with the level of the tribune, but is rather slightly lower. The two upper ones respectively run below the cornice that sustains the roofs of the side chapels and the nave.

FACHADA SUR

In the second bay of the south façade is located one of the two access doorways. Of simple structure, it is rectangular in its interior, and has a basket arch on its exterior, over which is a pointed arch which encloses a sort of tympanum. Until the demolition of the old consistory house, which hid the main door of the wall until the 20th century, the one here was the only access door to the church.
